Mobile first training workshop was held in Birmingham, England in 2002 and the 6th International Conference on Mobile Learning, which just ended in Melbourne, Australia. Five very short years, we went to “play” with toys to plan for the future or infrastructure to accommodate mobile phone shipments in all its forms …
I’ve been involved in mobile learning since 2003 and it is interesting to think about how he grew up and took over what is actually a pretty short time. As someone who has worked hard to introduce mobile learning I am very aware that reactions to my efforts have gone from “what are you on?” to “please come help us that it will”.
For those who are wondering, mobile learning is the delivery of teaching and learning through a portable or mobile pocket under the overall composition of the way teachers and students interact. But like any new concept there is flow in the evolution and meditate every mobile learning conference I mapped as follows:
2003 – mLearn London:
The theme is “new opportunities” and we see cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDA) phones. We talked about issues such as navigation on a small device such as SMS and a few games that are already on the phone. We also started talking about knowledge management and the type of learning that may apply.

2004 – mLearn in Rome
Held a conference on the technology in a 12th century castle in Rome was a fascinating experience!
This time, the theme is “The potential is great,” and we began to discuss the evolution of education, the impact of using a mobile device and usability of digital learning materials are being developed. We begin to see the new smart phones and wireless started to appear in several places that will soon extend the concept of mobility.
We are talking about using a PDA and a cell phone for packaging materials in a way that correspond to different learning styles, background and overcome several obstacles before.
2005 – mLearn in Cape Town
Theme “Learning is in your hands” is very appropriate in countries where Internet coverage is minimal, but the cell phone coverage is almost complete!
At this conference, we began to hear about convergence and management of mobile content. We look at some concrete examples of how the introduction of mobile learning for large groups and organizations and we started to talk about strategies to support teacher training and student learning in a way and such technology. 2006 – mLearn in Banff
OK, so we were able to go from one place to another great, but we should be moving and learning – right?
Theme in Canada is “all cultures and generations” and in the context of social computing revolution of the small but growing this topic was on how technology has broken all barriers of communication for those who want to stay in touch.
We heard about the $ 100 laptop and a desire to see every child with a laptop. We talked about the digital library where every book has been converted into digital format and can be accessed anywhere on any device. We talked seriously about the noise through a mixture of education and to explore the improvement of facilities evry where delivery can occur and a greater variety of devices that offer mobility.
We begin to understand the “Net Generation” that the spirit hypertext and learning approach with a totally different way for those who have left school a long time ago!
This conference has opened our eyes to explore the ways in which mobility shrinks the world and make access to learning a reality for anyone anywhere.
2007 – mLearn in Melbourne:
We chose the theme of this conference “Making Connections” and certainly taste conferences connectivity!
Even before the first speaker ended comments and reactions to moderate blog comments, Twitter, ninged, wikied up and posted to the virtual world! The speakers were invited questions from delegates worldwide.
We explore the issue of infrastructure and we talked at length about combining technology and pedagogy themselves how devices are now valued less for the “wow” factor of them to be useful in the composition of the teaching. We talked about integration and inclusion and how social networks can be used on mobile devices, as well as the fact that mobile devices now include a laptop with a wireless connection.
And we closed the conference for 10 years, and suppose to do now to ensure our services can we continue to quality education through new and emerging technologies.
