REMOTE TELESCOPE

In the summer of 2002, WYTEC staff attended the TOPS workshop presented by the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii. During this workshop collaborative alliances were established for the future development and support of astronomy education projects. Out of this alliance came the preliminary stages of planning for a WYTEC remote telescope to be located on Haleakala. this site when developed will house two remote telescopes to support the following projects and organizations.

  • The Faulkes Telescope Project
  • The IFA TOPS workshop participants and their educational activities
  • WYTEC projects and curriculum
  • The AAVSO, its members and areas of research and observation

Telescope and imaging equipment similar to what is deployed at the Douglas facility will be installed in the initial development. Alternative telescope enclosures are currently being evaluated. Wide field imaging systems are being evaluated as well.
